What the law says about caravan tyres.

A touring caravan has no MOT, so nothing forces anyone to look at its tyres. The rules still apply — and it is the driver of the towing vehicle who carries the penalty.

1.6mm

Legal minimum tread

Caravans and light trailers up to 3,500kg follow the same limit as cars: 1.6mm in a continuous band across the central three quarters of the tread, right around the tyre. Below 3mm, wet braking distances lengthen sharply — that is where we suggest replacing.

£2,500

Fine, per tyre

An illegal or defective tyre carries a fine of up to £2,500 and three penalty points — per tyre. Caravan tyres count, and the points go on the licence of whoever is towing.

5–7 yrs

Age, not mileage

There is no age limit written into law for caravans, but the Caravan Club advises replacing tyres at five years and never using them past seven. A caravan covers around 2,000 miles a year, so tyres almost always age out before they wear out.

Everything below is checked as part of a fitting or a pre-trip inspection. Ask and we will read the date codes off all four tyres and the spare for you.

Correct type & sizeTyres must be suitable for the load and speed the caravan is plated for. Many need a reinforced or commercial ("C") rating, not a standard car tyre.
Manufacturer's pressuresRunning below the recommended pressure is an offence in itself. Caravan pressures are usually far higher than a car's — check the plate or handbook, at the loaded weight.
No cuts, lumps or bulgesAny damage reaching the ply or steel cords makes the tyre illegal. Sidewall cracking from standing in the sun is the classic caravan failure.
No mixing constructionsRadial and cross-ply tyres must not be fitted across the same axle.
Reading the date codeThe four digits after DOT on the sidewall are the week and year of manufacture — 2419 means week 24 of 2019. That is the tyre's age, not the date you bought the caravan.
Towing speed limits50mph on single carriageways, 60mph on dual carriageways and motorways — and no third lane on a motorway with three or more lanes.
The spare counts tooA spare is not a legal requirement, but the moment it goes on it has to be legal. Spares that have lived under a caravan for a decade are rarely fit to use.

Most caravan work is booked a few days before a trip or a few weeks before the season starts. Tell us whether you would rather bring it to the garage on Uttoxeter Road or have us come out — storage sites are fine, just give us the site and the pitch number.
