How agricultural tyres wear out.

Tractor tyres rarely wear like car tyres. Lug height, sidewall condition and pressure tell you far more than tread depth — and each pattern points to a different cause.

New Replace

Lug wear & rounding

Lugs wear from the tip down and round off at the trailing edge. Once you're below roughly 20–25% of the original lug height, traction drops sharply and wheelspin starts costing you fuel and field time.

Cracks between lugs

Cracking & weathering

Machines that stand still age faster than machines that work. Deep cracks in the sidewall, at the bead or in the base of the lugs mean the casing is perishing — even with plenty of lug left.

Pressure-related wear

Too hard and the centre of the tread scrubs away; too soft and the shoulders and sidewalls take the load. Road work and field work want different pressures — we'll set them for how the machine is actually used.

When they need changing.

There's no MOT tread limit for a tractor in the field, so it's condition that decides. If any of these apply, get it looked at before the next busy week.

Lugs under 25% leftTraction and self-cleaning fall away long before the lug disappears.
Cords or belts showingAny exposed cord is an immediate replacement — it will not be repaired.
Cracks you can fit a nail inPerished rubber lets water into the casing and the tyre fails without warning.
Bulges or splitsA bulge means broken casing plies. Stop using the machine and call us.
Torn or missing lugsCommon on hard yards and road work — it puts the rest of the tread out of balance.
Losing pressure weeklyUsually a valve, rim seat or slow puncture — often repairable if caught early.
